14 Seconds of Plastic Waste

14 Seconds of Plastic Waste

Concept Image

43 feet long. Discarded plastic mosaic. 2010

A visual representation of the actual physical amount of plastic waste generated every 14 seconds in the United States.  This assemblage of plastic objects will fill the entire 2,064 cubic foot interior space of the 43 feet long by 6 feet wide by 8 feet high hallway case in the Tom Bradley International Customs Terminal.

The thousands of plastic objects filling the case are carefully arranged to take the form of a 43 foot long snake. An Emerald Boa, symbol of guardianship over the environment, gently undulates across the front surface of the display case glass, his scales a mosaic of carefully placed colored plastic objects.
