Gaia

Stainless steel. 2015. Currently on loan to The Ocala Sculpture Park, Ocala, FL.

This 10 foot tall monumental stainless steel head is named after the ancestral source of all life: the primal Mother Earth goddess, Gaia. I used a bird’s nest technique to create the woven web of steel strips that form the head and then defined the facial features more fully with carefully organized stainless steel shapes.

If you see Gaia on a clear day, the mirror polished iris’ reflect the sky and appear blue. An unexpected and magical effect I didn’t anticipate.
